From a Wired report by Tim Maly at Wired a microchip by Freescale that is so small that, yes, it can be swallowed:

“Chipmaker Freescale Semiconductor has created the world’s smallest ARM-powered chip, designed to push the world of connected devices into surprising places.

Announced today, the Kinetis KL02 measures just 1.9 by 2 millimeters. It’s a full microcontroller unit (MCU), meaning the chip sports a processor, RAM, ROM, clock and I/O control unit — everything a body needs to be a basic tiny computer.

The KL02 has 32k of flash memory, 4k of RAM, a 32 bit processor, and peripherals like a 12-bit analog to digital converter and a low-power UART built into the chip. By including these extra parts, device makers can shrink down their designs, resulting in tiny boards in tiny devices.

How tiny? One application that Freescale says the chips could be used for is swallowable computers. Yes, you read that right. ‘We are working with our customers and partners on providing technology for their products that can be swallowed but we can’t really comment on unannounced products,’ says Steve Tateosian, global product marketing manager.”

Yesterday I mentioned the way the future of print media was imagined in Ernest Callenbach’s fun 1974 speculative novel, Ecotopia. The author also broached the idea of environmentally friendly product packaging, conjuring a type of high-tech plastic that could “expire” (or biodegrade) the way its perishable contents would. In that vein, designer Aaron Mickelson has invented the Disappearing Package. From Tim Maly at Wired:

“Designer Aaron Mickelson wants to solve the problem of excess packaging, by creating products that have no packaging at all.

Every year, Americans generate a lot of solid waste. In 2010, 250 million tons, according to the EPA. A full 30 percent of that (about 76 million tons) comes from packaging — it’s the biggest culprit.

As awareness grows about this problem, many companies and designers are looking for solutions to green their packaging by either making it more recyclable, or reducing the amount. Mickelson wants to take that initiative all the way to its furthest extent and eliminate packaging waste entirely. His Pratt University master’s thesis, called The Disappearing Package, is a proposal for how that might happen. ‘On a whim, I started thinking about applying the functions of packaging to the product itself,’ says Mickelson. ‘I was immediately struck by the green potential for an idea like this, if it could be applied across several product types.'”

While Newt Gingrich and others seem determined to turn the moon into a strip mall, a lunar Levittown of sorts may be feasible soon thanks to a quartet of USC professors and their plan for “contour construction.” From Tim Maly at Fast Company:

“First, you solve the material transport problem by making the moon base out of the moon itself. Second, you mitigate the ‘humans are expensive’ problem by keeping them on the ground until the last minute–you use robots to build the base. Recently, USC Professors Behrokh Khoshnevis (Engineering), Anders Carlson (Architecture), Neil Leach (Architecture), and Madhu Thangavelu (Astronautics) completed their first research visualization for a system to do exactly that.

Using a technique called contour crafting, they propose sending robots to seed the surface of the moon with the basic infrastructure for a moon base (landing pads, roads, hangars, etc.). Once the construction is completed, human crew could lift off and move into their new home.”
