From the August 4, 1897 Brooklyn Daily Eagle:

“Bay Shore, L.I.–J. Hollenhauer of Brooklyn, summering at Bay Shore, has just lost one of his very valuable horses. The animal became crazy, it is said, and had to be shot.”
