Gary Cooper on What’s My Line?, in 1959, seven years after perhaps his greatest career highlight, High Noon. The ending of that film, with Marshal Will Kane discarding and stomping on his badge, angered John Wayne terribly. Wayne, like a lot of conservative reactionaries and law-and-order stalwarts, didn’t lead quite the simple, pure life he liked to pretend he did. A great star, but complex.
