In 1961, the Burgess Hill School in Hertfordshire, England, was something of an alternative educational institution for bongo-playing beatniks. Teachers and students alike wore leather jackets and dark glasses, smoked cigarettes during class, rode motorcycles, listened to jazz and twisted to Chubby Checker records. If a kid didn’t understand an algebra problem, the teachers just talked to them calmly about it. Nobody freaked out, man. Thankfully, this time warp was captured by newsreel producers.
